Loon Organics-Tips from the Farm

by Laura FrerichsTastemaker in Residence

Vegetable farming in Minnesota is a funny thing—growing crops from tiny seeds to harvest in 6 months is a whirlwind. So while it’s only the beginning of July, fall crops are at the top of our mind right now. The next couple weeks is a crucial time to get our fall crops transplanted and seeded. After a rainy week last week, we were anxious to get the romanesco, cauliflower, 9th planting of broccoli, and salad mix in the ground. We will keep planting broccoli for the next 3-4 weeks, along with the last round of cauliflower and romanesco. Adam is prepping beds for our fall carrots, beets and other roots. Meanwhile, we are closely watching our first summer crops (the sweet peppers are almost ready!) and cleaning up the first lettuce and pea beds. Fingers crossed that the rain moves out early this week and we farmers can all get some time to dry out and get things cleaned up in the fields.
