Sloppy Joes
by Cindi Sutter, Founder of The Spirited Table® -recipe submitted by Sue Schwalbach
Here's the Sloppy Joe recipe that's been around for awhile and making a comeback when you don't want to stand over a grill. Remember the Manwich from the 60's? Here's the better homemade version from "Betty Crocker Cookbook, 11th Edition: The Big Red Cookbook".
Makes six generous sandwiches.
Ingredients
1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 cup ketchup
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp ground mustard
1/8 tsp pepper
6 good hamburger buns, split
Instructions
- Cook beef, onions and celery over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until beef is done. Drain. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and pepper. Heat to just bubbling, then simmer uncovered 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Let party-goers spoon onto buns.
Enjoy this nostalgic picnic fare!
