Various stops in Uganda on our 2017 Trip of a Lifetime!
While travel seemed almost unimaginable just a short time ago, people are now planning to trot around the globe to see those spectacular spots and exotic locales on their bucket list. Pent up in our own homes, cities, and states has led many to reevaluate the things in life they’d like to do, and one of the hottest topics of the moment is traversing the world.
After a short flight from Nairobi, we started our own Africa adventure in Uganda by visiting Kibale National Park for a chimpanzee trek. Due to habitat loss, poaching and disease, the current world population of these expressive creatures is estimated at between 170,000 to 300,000. We so enjoyed watching a family unit (called a community) with its bubbly and energetic babies!

From there, we took a leisurely game drive through Uganda’s countryside on our way to the Myeya Safari Lodge for the most amazing Boat Safari located on the Kazinga Channel of Lake Edward. We viewed numerous hippopotamus, roves of elephant, crocodile, and water buffalo, as well as an incredible amount of waterfowl. We even made a stop to view the tree climbing lions and giant, wooly warthogs of Queen Elizabeth National Park!
But, by far, the major highlight of our trip occurred in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park—our hike to view the mountain gorilla! Groups of gorillas range from 5 to 30 in count, with each group containing a dominant male silverback. We were lucky enough to find the Bitukura Group within a short time of the beginning of our tour, and what a delight they were. With the clouds enveloping the valley, it was truly a gorillas in the mist event!
We finished this amazing journey at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp celebrating the end of a magnificent adventure in Uganda by touring a local hospital and Batwa Village, a recreation of the last home of the Pygmy People. A exhilarating adventure was enjoyed by all! Kawheri na kuaga until we meet again to explore Trips of a Lifetime, Part 2: Amazing Africa, Kenya.
