June is Rose Month
by Reba Berge, Tastemaker in Residence
A rose is a living organism in delicate balance with its surrounding environment. Changes in temperature, humidity, and other factors can alter this balance and have a significant effect on it. Roses are a complex mix of vessels, leaves, and petals which must be handled with care. Here are a few tips to keep in mind next time you buy, work with, or receive a rose.
Roses are temperature sensitive! – When temperatures are too high, food is used up too fast and water is lost faster than it is replaced. When temperatures are too low, the rose can freeze.
Roses are delicate! – Petals may bruise, tear, or break off; stems can bend and break; leaves can tear, turn brown and break off. Handle the entire stem with care.
Roses need “food!” – The flower “food” moves up the stem into the flower where it is converted into energy for keeping the flower alive. Always mix the flower food according to package instructions.
