When is it possible to have a midsummer night dream party?
by Cindi Sutter, Founder & Editor of Spirited Table®
Ok. I confess. There are some days when I just want to forge a new path, leave my desk and quietly enter a spiritedly dreamy midsummer celebration, with a cast of people I do not know. No, I haven't been drinking. Just remember, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96: so no one is fact checking anything.
Ardith's dreamy Midsummer Night's Dream table inspires me to celebrate the magic of summer, all the while remembering that for most of the USA, summer began while some of us in Northern Climates, still had snow on the ground. So technically, I'm way past the bewitching hour/date for midsummer which is somewhere between early and late June, depending on which of the Wikipedia information below you choose to go with; but I'm not giving up. I'm making up my own version, not going for perfection, just a romantic table for two this weekend, on our deck!
So I'm giving you permission and inspiration to create your own version of a dreamy party table and celebrate your own midsummer, no matter the date! See our original Midsummer Night Dream Flowers post + the recipe to help you create.
Here are the Wikipedia Midsummer parameters; but really do you think Wikipedia is dreamy like us?
Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. The undivided Christian Church designated June 24 as the feast day of the early Christian martyr St John the Baptist, and the observance of St John's Day begins the evening before, known as St John's Eve.
These are commemorated by many Christian denominations, such as the Roman Catholic Church, Lutheran Churches, and Anglican Communion.[1][7] In Sweden, the Midsummer is such an important festivity that there have been serious discussions to make the Midsummer's Eve into the National Day of Sweden, instead of June 6. It may also be referred to as St. Hans Day.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.
