W3 Book Club Traverses the Globe with “Around the World in 80 Days“

by Teri E. Popp, Tastemaker in Residence

Glorious locales abound when Phileas Fogg, a member of the Reform Club, wagers his fellow club members that he can circumnavigate the world in only 80 days. In Jules Verne‘s adventure novel published in 1873, Phileas and his faithful manservant, Passepartout, see the sights in England, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States in pursuit of winning Mr. Fogg’s bet.

Our W3 Book Club host for the evening chose-appropriately enough-travel as a theme for this colorful and adventurous endeavor. Attendees dressed to fit the country of their choice, with some sporting attire from several different locations.

Each guest brought a dish to share, with the menu including a veritable world-wide smorgasbord:

  • Bootleggers (US)
  • Mini 7 Layer Dip with Chips & Guacamole accompanied by Mini Margheritas (Mexico)
  • Sushi & Gyozo (Japan)
  • Egg Rolls (China)
  • Con Queso Fundido (Mexico)
  • Lamb Rogan Josh with Rice and Naan (India)
  • Sausage and Sauerkraut Pizza (Germany)
  • Strawberry Trifle (English)

Our host set an amazing red and gold table, with beatiful touches of glass trimmed in gold that captures the diverse themes from “Around the World in 80 Days“.

To add to the excitement of the evening, we watched the 1956 movie of “Around the World in 80 Days“ starring David Niven and Shirley MacLaine—all 3 hours of it! And, on that note, it’s time to bid you Adios, Sayonara, Adieu, Auf Wiedersehen, and Goodbye until next month!
