Memorable Memorial Day Treasures

I've always felt a bit odd writing about the soldiers, sacrifice and spirited ways to celebrate our freedom on Memorial Day weekend, because for my husband and I it's not only a celebration of his Vietnam service to our country, it's also our anniversary weekend.

We were married in Vail almost 30 years ago, surrounded by 80 of our closest friends. So we're steeped in the traditions of the past and present reasons to celebrate our marriage. One of my favorites is a very unique vessel that we used to share our first glass of champagne; it's called a Nuremberg Wedding Cup. It enables you to literally take your first sip together, but only if your timing for tilting the cup is in unison. 

My favorite writing tool is Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus. Guess what? I checked this thesaurus and the word unison = agreement, accord, sound, occurring together or simultaneously. I believe that's not only what marriage should include, but what our military does and should represent to the world. If a band of soldiers doesn't consist of brothers/sisters in unison, disasters occur, lives are threatened and freedom doesn't thrive. So let's practice something together this weekend, a privileged statement that was banned from our schools long ago. I believe this statement stands for a country in unison and the freedoms that soldiers died for, just as our flag waves for freedom.
