A Pacific Passover
by Zehorit Heilicher, Tastemaker in Residence
This spring we are embarking on a new family experience: a Pacific Northwest Passover. This first year of our empty nest we are taking the holiday out west to celebrate with our four kids. So, we booked a vacation rental (VRBO), packed a few Passover necessities and flew off to Seattle.
After a couple of days of sightseeing and exploring it is time to pull up our sleeves and start cooking. On the menu for the traditional meal are: Dill Matzah ball soup, roasted lamb, rosemary potatoes and much more. My Yemenite date Haroset is all ready – sweet and spicy. One of the traditional Seder foods, it symbolizes the mortar the Hebrew slaves had to produce to make bricks for building the pyramids.
Tonight we will gather around our rented table with our 4 kids, tell the story of the exodus, eat delicious foods, sing songs and count ourselves fortunate to be free to celebrate our holiday and observe our traditions.
