Emily Henderson On All Things Fall: Design, Entertaining, Target’s Newest Home Collections and More

When it came time to show off our new fall Home collections, we pulled out all the stops. Target Home Style Expert Emily Henderson and a few friends made their way out to a picturesque town along the Hudson River in upstate New York for an overnight retreat led by Target’s own internal design team. On the itinerary? Lunch at an art gallery, exploring quaint artisanal shops and a Target-style dinner, decked out with Target’s Home must-haves for fall—all meant to put us in that autumn mindset. Pumpkin spice latte, anyone?

After the trip, we asked Emily to offer up a few entertaining tips and must-haves inspired by what she saw as the group explored Hudson.

“The selection of entertaining-themed décor this season is really impressive,” said Emily. “The pieces look and feel really elevated because of the materials and finishes used to create them—marble, wood, copper and brass with touches of gold and other metals. The Threshold Marble Mortar and Pestle Set, Marble and Wood Top Salt Cellar and Marble and Copper Handle Serving Tray are some of my favorites. I also love all of the lighting. The Threshold Copper Menlo Collection Desk Lamp and Edison Bulb Lamp are favorites.”

Emily also suggests introducing different textures and fabrics into your home to up the warmth factor—the Threshold Frosted Gray Fur Stool and Threshold Plaid Decorative Blanket in Black and Cream are the perfect ways to do just that!

As for fall entertaining, Emily’s has two tips: Always have plenty of throw blankets on hand for when warm fall days turn into chilly nights, and stock up on a surplus of serveware.

“There’s nothing worse than scrambling at the last minute to find a serving dish for a certain part of your meal! Plus, you can use [serving trays] for other purposes, like controlling clutter.”

Other fall trends to keep in mind as you’re shopping for the season? Rich, jewel tones and wood accents.

“I love the rich natural colors that pop up this time of year, like berry tones, navy and deep reds,” Emily said. “You’ll notice a lot of wood accents on décor pieces throughout the Target fall assortment, like the Threshold Marble Tic Tac Toe Set, Walnut Wall Mirror and Wood and Leather Accent Table.”
