The Tel Aviv Carmel Market

by Zehorit Heilicher, Tastemaker in Residence

At the heart of Tel Aviv, down a curvy, narrow and crowded lane lies the Carmel Market. One of many markets throughout Israel, this one is a must see stop on any trip to Tel Aviv. It is difficult to portray the market’s assault on your senses; fruits, vegetables and herbs of all colors and aromas are displayed in artful piles, crusty warm baguettes and golden rolls are stretched next to tender pita and sticky baklavas of dizzying array of colors and shapes are beckoning.

Vendors call out their wares loudly, creating creative rhyming slogans, not shying away from calling out to you directly, inviting you to taste and sample their goods. Walking down the center isle your ears will be bombarded with: “Only today – the price is so low my wife wants to divorce me!” “Fresh figs – just like honey – everyone will want to kiss you after you eat these!”  Loud, outrageous and fun!

You can find everything here; from housewares, clothes, and home décor to a variety of edible items. But remember one key point – this is a place that thrives on haggling! Do not accept the initial price, walk away if needed – the price Will come down! Before you know it – you will be munching on sweet baklava, sipping on tart, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and toting a new tacky shirt boasting that you were here, at the Carmel Market!
