Why Traditions Matter
by Neal Kielar, Tastemaker in Residence
Its become a cliche' that our lives are exceptionally busy with the steady flow of options, information and activities that comprise them. A cliche' based in reality and a tough cycle to break. This isn't a particularly bad thing because we're also productive, lively, well-rounded and often forward-looking because of it.
But there's a tendency to lead our daily lives one task, event or inspiration after another. Sometimes we lack context and that means we're missing out on the bigger picture. The long game. The why-we-do-all-this-stuff foundation.
And that's why traditions matter. Think of traditions as the glue that holds it all together or the links between individual pieces and the bigger scheme of things. When we slow down enough to participate in traditions we're taking a rest from the micro to enjoy the macro.
The big holiday season for many of us is just around the corner. And while there are plenty of tasks to check off our lists, try to remember - and take time for - some of the threads that help it all make sense.
It's easy:
- Prepare and enjoy long time favorite foods with others during the holidays - and really any day
- Repeat a favorite activity that you enjoyed in the past and make it a "thing" that you'll do again
- Get together with family and friends and be intentional about it
- Pull out a piece of furniture or decor that's been part of your life and make it a focal point again
- Join in on the traditions of a friend or neighbor and be a respectful cultural tourist
By all means, it's important to stay on top of our daily lives. Just be sure to make space for the traditions that add meaning to your lives.
