My Summer CSA Box Experience
by Kiki Rosatti, Tastemaker in Residence
Fresh, colorful, plentiful, yummy veggies. For someone who grew up on canned vegetables, fresh is a unique experience for my taste buds - they just taste. If you eat fresh, organic vegetables, you know what I'm talking about.
To further this experience, Cindi and I are sharing a CSA= Community Supported Agriculture box every other week this summer. Not only are the vegetables scrumptious, but I'm being introduced to so many varieties I've never experienced.
The box is always accompanied by recipes - but I'm so new to this game, I just want to experience the vegetable in their most raw form. So here's what I do. I cut up the raw vegetables and place them in containers. I sometimes will steam them for about a minute and a half, plunge them into cold water and then put them in the containers. I then put the containers on a lazy Susan in the middle of the table for lunch and dinner. The whole family then munches on them - before, during and after the meal.
Preparing them ahead of time makes it so easy to grab for picnics, outdoor sporting events and of course on the boat. If they are available - everyone eats them - this I can promise. But they have to work around me - as my hand is in the "jar" most often.
