Let the Game begin!

The golden big day is almost here: Super Bowl 50! This year, like always we will gather at my brother in law’s beautiful home to enjoy the game, a roaring fire and lots of yummy munchies.

Erma Bombeck once said, “The Rose Bowl is the only bowl I’ve ever seen that I didn’t have to clean…” So, in that spirit, I aim for a game plan that involves minimal work during the Super Bowl and easy clean up when it’s over. Some variations on “Make Your Own Bar” are really easy to prepare and require minimal management during the evening. Start with a mixed cocktail bar: Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s or Margaritas are fun and delicious. For a younger crowd make a root beer float bar or just a non-alcoholic punch.

A few dips help control our crowd’s munchies until the meal and then we usually have a sandwich bar: sliced breads, cheeses and cold cuts accompanied by mayo, mustard and an assortment of toppings, along with coleslaw and potato salad. Every guest can make a sandwich and carry it back to the couch to watch the half time show. We set out trays of cookies and bars with a cake or two for friends to sample during commercial break. We all get to enjoy the game and nobody has to work too hard… Except those players, of course!
