My Time In Stillwater, The Town

by Sue ZelicksonTastemaker in Residence

Summers end and mornings crisp fall air makes a trip to Stillwater, MN, a spirited adventure in many ways.

In less than a one hour drive from the Twin Cities, you find this gem of a town on the banks of the St. Croix River and directly across from the state of Wisconsin.

Serious retail therapy in the various shops that line Main Street and all its arteries, are not the only attraction. Wine and dine opportunities burst forth from every corner. A clever sign in front of the Mad Capper Saloon/Eatery promotes their Husband Day Care Center; yes really. Leave your husband with us! We'll look after him for you. You only pay for his drinks. This little town takes care of everything.

Stillwater is defined by it’s morning to night entertainment and special events galore for family and girlfriend get aways.

Old and new eateries from the Lowell Inn, Brines, Marx Wine Bar and Grill, Smalley’s Caribbean BBQ, Green Room and brand new Lolo's are only the marquee for many more local lunch and dinners stops. You must indulge your sweet tooth with a stop at two great candy stores on Main Street. You will find treasures on side street detours lined with shops filled with art, antiques, clothing, furniture and gifts for every occasion imaginable.

Yes, there are spas and salons, wineries and brewery tours; and even, "Foodies on Foot" =  a 3 hour guided food and beverage walking tour. (www.foodiesonfootmn.com).

If you find yourself strolling and can’t get it all done in a day trip, there are plenty of bed and breakfasts, historic inns, hotels and motels nearby, unless of course, you have a large boat on the St Croix.

Don't forget the ice cream at Nelson's on Olive Street with their enormous servings and Mara Mi on Main Street which scoops out Izzys flavors along with great pastries and a shop filled with incredible paper goods.

Sparks fly in the summer/fall seasons but you’ll find a special slice of life if you take time to enjoy the town of Stillwater any time of year.
